  • MUA, Patrick in Darling Harbour dust-up
Cargo handling on several vessels at Darling Harbour came to a standstill yesterday after members of Maritime Union of Australia walked off the job as a result of a dispute with stevedore Patrick.
The walkout came at a bad time for Patrick and Sydney and affected four vessels, including a car carrier which would have been in and out of the port within hours.
Two containerships, one from ANZDL and one from Columbus Line, were also affected as was a bulk carrier carrying a consignment of steel.
The ANZDL vessel, the Direct Falcon, had only a few containers left to finish working when she was hit by the walkout.
  • 'Two minutes to midnight" for Aust shipping
BHP Transport's decision to withdraw from the trans-Tasman trades should start alarm bells ringing in federal parliament over the issue of providing the Australian shipping industry with fiscal incentives similar to those available in other countries, according to the Australian Shipowners Association.
The association's chief executive, Lachlan Payne, said yesterday BHPT's decision highlighted the need for the government to act decisively on the findings of the shipping reform working group established to investigate ways of implementing the recommendations of the Shipping Reform Group.
  • Anderson restates MUA warning
Federal Transport Minister John Anderson yesterday told the Maritime Union of Australia to ensure that redundancy agreements with stevedores were in place before the 30 April deadline in order that the stevedores could access the $250 million government redundancy fund.
Mr Anderson had warned the MUA about this a fortnight ago as well.
In answer to a 'Dorothy Dixer' in parliamentary question time, Mr Anderson noted that the 12 stevedoring companies which submitted restructuring plans by 31 December last year, had until 30 April to implement those plans under the provisions of the government's reform package.
  • ANLCL finalises staff, agency changes

From the first of next month, ANLCL will open a new branch office in Fremantle, replacing the third party agency arrangement with Columbus Line, which ends on 28 February. Former P&O Nedlloyd executive Steve Neates will join ANLCL as West Australian manager, based in Fremantle.
  • 'For sale' sign up on Keppel Cairncross
The decision to advertise for expressions of interest in Keppel Cairncross's ship repair yard in Brisbane should not be viewed as an indication that the yard is in immediate danger of being closed, a source said yesterday.
The source said the decision, by the voluntary administrators appointed to the company last month, was in line with their efforts to ensure that Keppel Cairncross could trade its way out of financial difficulties.
"Basically this was the intended direction anyhow, because it's what you've got to do," the source said.
