Drybulk Freight: Flat Conditions Persist Flat conditions persisted in the Capesize and Panamax sectors of the dry cargo freight market and prospects for owners as Easter holidays approached were not very encouraging, brokers said. A reasonable volume of fresh grain orders was reported but brokers doubted these would affect the market materially while Panamax orders from the Continent appeared to have dwindled, resulting in more tonnage ballasting to the U.S. Gulf. The failure of some Panamaxes on subjects in the Atlantic was another negative factor, brokers said. The Baltic Freight Index (BFI) fell six points to 957 and the Baltic Panamax Index dropped 11 points to 976, while the Baltic Handy Index gained four points to 764, although the weakening trend in South America was reflected in the decline of the Brazil/Continent trial grain route to $16.13 from $16.66.
Med Tanker Rates Firm Up Clean tanker rates have firmed, especially in the Mediterranean, shipping brokers said last week. Rates for 33,000 ton cargoes between Europe and the U.S. rose from W180 to W190 while 30,000 ton gas oil movements paid W140 to the U.K./Continent and W130 to the Mediterranean. But the struggling Middle East market has seen further falls, with vessels from 27,500 tons to 45,000 tons fixing at W130 into India. Poor demand for long-haul voyages and lack of westward interest has withered levels. Rates for larger ships have collapsed still further with 65,000 ton cargoes going at W105 and 85,000 tonrs paying W90 on Red Sea to Asia voyages.
