  • Wilhelmsen Lines, Wallenius Lines Merge
Wilhelmsen Lines created a joint operating firm with Wallenius Lines to run what it said was the world's biggest fleet of car transport ships and Ro-Ro vessels. The new company, to be owned 50/50 by the two firms, would operate more than 70 vessels and has 10 more under construction for delivery in 1999 and 2000, together with options for other new vessels. Wilhelmsen and Wallenius, which is family owned, would continue to own their respective vessels after the new company became fully operational on July 1.
Wilhelmsen said that "this creates the world's biggest shipping group within transport for all types of rolling cargoes, together with container capacity in certain markets."
  • Damen Buys $25M Stake In Romanian Yard
Damen Shipyards Group has reportedly bought a majority stake in Romanian Danube-based shipyard Santierul Naval Galati. The State Ownership Fund (FPS) sold 51 percent from its total 70.53 percent in Santierul Naval Galati for $25 million dollars. The amount includes a five-year investment program to be run by the Dutch investor.
"We will upgrade Galati shipyard in the next five years to be able to face the international competition," Damen general manager Herman Quast said.
  • Suez Canal Receipts At $156.4 Million
Egypt earned $156.4 million in January from Suez Canal receipts, the same as in December, 1998. The receipts were $145.0 million in January, 1998, it said. The December figure was adjusted from $155.4.
  • Drybulk Freight: Flat Conditions Persist
Flat conditions persisted in the Capesize and Panamax sectors of the dry cargo freight market and prospects for owners as Easter holidays approached were not very encouraging, brokers said. A reasonable volume of fresh grain orders was reported but brokers doubted these would affect the market materially while Panamax orders from the Continent appeared to have dwindled, resulting in more tonnage ballasting to the U.S. Gulf. The failure of some Panamaxes on subjects in the Atlantic was another negative factor, brokers said. The Baltic Freight Index (BFI) fell six points to 957 and the Baltic Panamax Index dropped 11 points to 976, while the Baltic Handy Index gained four points to 764, although the weakening trend in South America was reflected in the decline of the Brazil/Continent trial grain route to $16.13 from $16.66.
  • Med Tanker Rates Firm Up
Clean tanker rates have firmed, especially in the Mediterranean, shipping brokers said last week. Rates for 33,000 ton cargoes between Europe and the U.S. rose from W180 to W190 while 30,000 ton gas oil movements paid W140 to the U.K./Continent and W130 to the Mediterranean. But the struggling Middle East market has seen further falls, with vessels from 27,500 tons to 45,000 tons fixing at W130 into India. Poor demand for long-haul voyages and lack of westward interest has withered levels. Rates for larger ships have collapsed still further with 65,000 ton cargoes going at W105 and 85,000 tonrs paying W90 on Red Sea to Asia voyages.
