  • Minister hears claims of Portnet corruption
A document claiming corruption and nepotism in the South African port parastatal, Portnet, has been handed to the minister responsible for the transport group as well as the office of the deputy president.
  • Subsidiaries putting 'excessive' strain on South Korean yards
SOUTH Korean shipbuilders have shouldered too great a burden for supporting group companies, and with difficulties in the shipbuilding sector the responsibility now appears to be excessive, warns one research analyst in South Korea.
  • Copenhagen and Malm' forge link
THE boards of Copenhagen and Malm' ports have accepted a proposal to merge operations into an equally-owned company, which will become Scandinavia's second-largest port operator behind Gothenburg.
  • Alaska powerhouse fuels BP Arco link
A BP Amoco takeover of US oil firm Atlantic Richfield (Arco) for an estimated $25bn would create a mega-oil company with an impressive array of oil and gas assets around the world. It would have a bigger market capitalisation than Exxon before its merger with Mobil.
  • Tie-up may signal tanker setback
THE oil tanker market could suffer another thorn in its side if the merger talks between BP/Amoco and Atlantic Richfield Company (Arco) come to fruition.
  • Alaskan call for tighter control on oil spill risks
Stricter controls are needed to prevent oil pollution in Alaskan waters from cargo vessels and cruiseships to bring them into line with the tighter regulation of the tanker industry following the Exxon Valdez disaster, delegates at an Alaskan conference have argued.
  • Is age limit on tanker quality just a figment of political imagination?
"I HAVE yet to understand the nature of the terrible virus that apparently affects a tanker 24 years, 11 months and 30 days into its life," remarked Peter Livanos last week in politely acid style.
