Cette décision repose sur quatre considérations: la connexion au transport fluvial, la proximité d’un grand client, la proximité de ses propres installations et le manque de capacité au terminal ferroviaire de TRW.

    Le groupe Safmarine, filiale de AP Møller, a procédé à une restructuration des activités dans le domaine des services axés sur le conventionnel/breakbulk, ce qui implique la création d’une cellule de coordination chargée des opérations à l’échelle mondiale et qui opère d’Anvers. Situation logique étant donné l’expertise et le know how que possède le staff anversois de Safmarine dans ce domaine. Albert Pegg, Breakbulk Trades Executive, nous a développé les premières applications d’une stratégie en cours de développement.

    Après une carrière bien remplie, dont vingt-cinq années passées à la direction de la MBZ, la société qui gère le port de Bruges-Zeebrugge, Fernand Traen se retire de la vie active à l’âge de 70 ans. L’œuvre qu’il a accomplie en tant que responsable du port côtier belge, est pour le moins considérable. Il suffit de comparer les photographies de Zeebrugge en 1975 avec la situation actuelle pour saisir l’importance du chemin parcouru. Que de combats livrés sur les plan politique et administratif, que de débats menés au cours des années qui précédèrent la décision de réaliser les nouveaux avant- et arrière-ports! Pendant toutes ces années, Fernand Traen n’a pas ménagé ses efforts et a largement contribué à faire de Zeebrugge un acteur de premier plan pour certains trafics au sein des ports de la rangée du Nord, du Havre à Hambourg. Au cours d’un entretien, nous lui avons demandé comment il voyait les prochaines évolutions.
