HOLLAND, Mich. -- Worries about terrorism and the nation's sputtering economy, together with increased competition from traditional Caribbean cruises, have taken the wind out of the sails of Michigan's once-resurgent Great Lakes cruise industry, some tourism officials say.
"We were seeing the industry grow by leaps and bounds here until Sept. 11 (2001)," said Felicia Fairchild, head of the Saugatuck-Douglas Convention and Visitors Bureau. "That stopped it."
