Activity at the Port of Mombasa hit an all time high last year with the container cargo handling a total of 380,353 twenty-ton equivalent units (TEUS) compared to 305,427 TEUS in 2002. This represented a growth of 24.53 per cent.
Kenya Ports Authority attributed the growth to successful marketing of Mombasa as a hub for East Africa. This made the port attract a large amount of transshipment traffic that led to a phenomenal rise in the volume of activity from 340,452 tons in 2002 to 605,360 tons in 2003.
