MANY of those in the shipping industry old enough to remember the downturn after the oil shocks of the 1970s will also probably remember physically battening old wooden hatch covers. Before making an ocean passage, or when rough weather threatened, crews of old-fashioned dry cargo ships went through a familiar ritual, which was actually a highly effective system of ensuring that the hatch covers stood up to the worst the sea could offer.
