In the first half of 2011, the Genoese shipping houses have grown an average of 5% of sales compared to the first half of last year. The data refer to companies listed Couriers Transporters Association Freight Forwarders of Genoa (Spediporto) and is based on data from a survey of a representative sample of companies realized that the association has established the Observatory to analyze the semi-annual basis indices that characterize their sector.
The volume of goods transported from the category in the first six months of this year amounted to about 770mila TEUs (net of voids, transhipment and those managed directly by shipping companies), of which about 362mila TEUs in exporting and about 408mila in import.
In particular, 10% of the Genoese shipping companies reported an increase in traffic volumes greater than or equal to 30%, 12% increase between 15% and 20% and 21% between +10% and +5%, while 37% were placed instead on substantial levels of stability compared to the same period last year. 16% of the company actually declined between 5% and 10%, 2% reported a -20% and another 2% had a decrease of about 30%.
The Observatory has shown that for 80% of the houses of the Genoese shipping region that has driven traffic in the first half of 2011 was primarily the Far East, followed by Africa and the Middle East and by the European, Central and South America and only a residual from North America and Oceania.
From the viewpoint of the food product categories is the type that has most contributed to the resumption of trade in the first half of 2011, followed by chemicals and pharmaceuticals, textiles, and from clothing, furniture and furnishings, and mechanical and plant engineering.
The Centre has also examined the impact of geopolitical crisis of the North African countries on the activities of member companies.Considering that about 50% of the companies attending Spediporto business relations with North Africa, the information gleaned from the survey point out that 37% of the members has been affected by this crisis. In particular, with regard to trade relations with Libya freight volumes have declined by up to 70% compared to the average values of the period.
Finally, as regards employment, the Centre's results show that there are still no significant signs of recovery. Almost all of the associated companies which, since 2009, had recourse to social security (about 15% of members) for 2011 has also renewed the demand for such support measures.
For the third quarter of 2011, the Observatory Spediporto provides an average increase in turnover of 3% over the same period last year.
