The Italian Fincantieri and Teijin Automotive Technologies,
European subsidiary of Japan's Teijin Ltd., have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding to start a collaboration
aimed at the engineering development of non-structural bulkheads
in composite materials for naval applications. According to the agreement,
Teijin Automotive Technologies will lead the
engineering and industrialization with the support of Fincantieri.
The initiative aims to introduce solutions to the shipping sector
in composite materials, with particular attention to the
weight reduction and functional integration, in response to the most
High operational and safety requirements for the units
naval vehicles.
The bulkheads will be made using a composite material
patented by Aeronautical Service, which has obtained with
the "non-combustibility" certification was successful,
a basic requirement for use on board ships. Fincantieri
already collaborates with Aeronautical Service, an Italian SME
specialized in advanced aerospace solutions, in the field of
activities to foster the large-scale adoption of
carbon-based composites and cutting-edge technologies, both in the
civil and military shipbuilding.
Commenting on the agreement, the CEO and Director
general of Fincantieri, Pierroberto Folgiero pointed out that,
'by promoting the use of new generation materials,
we make it possible to develop lighter and more
while opening up new design opportunities
- so far not feasible - particularly in the military field".
